The history of the Mills Memorial Baptist Church in Mayville really begins with the settlement of Rev. C. B. Mills in this locality which was in 1856. He had for some time been principal of Georgia Seminary in Ohio but his health failing, he moved to this part of Michigan, then a wilderness and located one mile south of the village and began the work of carving out a home.
Mr. Mills preached his first sermon April 21, 1856 to the few settlers who had assembled in his own log cabin. This was the first sermon preached by a white man in this part of Tuscola and Lapeer counties. He succeeded in gathering enough people together to found a church. Accordingly on April 4, 1857, the Fremont Free Baptist Church was organized with the following as charter members: Rev. C. B. Mills and wife, Horace Fox and wife, David Fulton and wife and Ezra Tripp. On the following day, Sunday April 5th, the following persons were baptized and received to church membership: Leonard Fox and wife, Calvin Fox and wife, Charles Dickerson and wife and Alfred Tripp.
Rev. C. B. Mills was chosen pastor of the church and served it as such continuously till 1874, except two years during which time he was in New Haven. Rev. E. J. Doyle was pastor during Mr. Mills absence.
In 1874 he was elected Secretary and Treasurer of Hillsdale College and he immediately moved his family to Hillsdale where he remained till 1887. During his absence the following ministers served the church as pastor: Rev. S. A. Currier, John Tree and N. A. Farr. When he returned, he found only a remnant of the church he had formerly established. He at once set about reorganizing and establishing another church.
The Genesee Quarterly Meeting was asked to send a council and look over the field with a view to organizing a church. Rev. C. B. Mills and John Tree were present as members of that council. The meeting was held in the Baptist Church July 9, 1887 and resulted in the organization of the Mayville Free Baptist Church. The following were charter members: Rev. C. B. Mills, May Mills, Martin Fox and wife, Mrs. Wm Randall, Kerzia Rounds, Geo. B. Felton and wife, Allie C. Hamilton, David Fulton and Geo. Hammond. Geo B. Felton, Adda Felton and Allie C. Hamilton were received as candidates for baptism and went forward in that ordinance the following day - July 10. The following officers were chosen: Pastor - Rev. C. B. Mills, Deacon - Martin Fox, Clerk - Geo. B. Felton, Treasurer - Geo. Hamilton.
Rev. Mills remained pastor of this church till his death which occurred March 11, 1896. His heart had been set on building a meeting house. To accomplish this he had given much hard labor, he had so far succeeded as to get the cellar dug and much of the material was on the ground, and he fondly hoped to see realized what had been so long to him a cherished dream.
But our Father in Heaven ordered it otherwise. He was suddenly taken from labor to reward. His death made a profound impression in the community. His funeral sermon was preached by Rev. A. T. Salley, D.D. of Hillsdale College. The congregation more than filled the Baptist Church and those that could not be accommodated went to the M. E. Church where an impromptu service was held, different persons making
remarks.
Rev. W. A. Myers was chosen his successor. Under his guiding hand, the work went on. The death of Martin Fox followed soon. This left the church without a deacon and also a treasurer as he was serving the church in both capacities. Mark Bailey was chosen deacon and Geo. Dawson Treasurer. It was found that the church was also without a clerk and Miss Ida Bailey was elected to that office.
In the meantime, the church building was making progress. The corner stone was laid September 9, 1896 with appropriate exercises, the pastor being assisted by Rev. H. M. Ford, Rev. C. H. Myers, Rev. A. F. Bryant and Rev. J. D. McCeall. Then followed the dedication which took place January 17, 1897. A session of the Genesee Quarterly Meeting was held with the church at that time.
Sunday was a day never to be forgotten by those who were present. A driving rain had set in early in the morning and it did not abate at the hour of service but continued to pour down. However, when it was time for the sermon, the house was well filled.

Rev. A. T. Salley preached a powerful sermon. Then H. M. Ford attempted what seemed to all an impossible task. It was necessary to raise about $2,600.00 in order to clear the property from debt. But the people responded nobly and the desired amount was raised. The dedication sermon was preached in the afternoon at 2:30 o'clock by Rev. R. Dunn, D.D. to a packed house and the pastor made the dedication prayer.
Rev. H. M. Ford preached in the evening. The Holy Spirit was present all the day. In an after meeting held at the close of the evening service, it was found that in all thirteen persons had began the good life during the day.
